You only have to look as far as today’s news that eBay has purchased Shopping.com to get a sense for the carnage Google can bring.
No one is safe from Google’s momentum. Not Microsoft. Not Amazon. And no, not even eBay.
As online sellers realize driving customers and prospects via Google is more cost efficient than eBay, it’s put the auction site on its heels. EBay’s stock has declined considerably, along with its traffic in recent months, and most signs point to search as the culprit.
As a result, the purchase of Shopping.com is no surprise. I’d look for a purchase of Overstock down the pike too. And I’d also be on the lookout for eBay to take a strong look at online classifieds and leveraging their ownership stake in Craigslist to make up lost revenue.
So, what’s this have to do with online recruitment?
If Google – and search in general – can can disrupt an 800 lb. gorilla like eBay, think of what it could do to job boards.
As sites like Craigslist, Indeed and SimplyHired consistently drive employers away from print and pay-to-play job sites, imagine what Google could do if they got in the game. The current bleeding could go from a faucet drip to Niagara Falls.
