Articles

The New York Times (recent investor in Indeed.com) put out a hate piece on Google today. Check it out here (free registration).

The article essentially paints Google as the market’s new Microsoft, hoarding the world’s best engineering talent, bullying media, and having an overall aura of arrogance. Can you blame them?

My favorite comment from the article is as follows:

"When I meet with venture capitalists, or if I’m engaged in a
conversation about going into partnership with someone, inevitably the
question is, ‘Why couldn’t Google do what you’re doing?’ " said Craig
Donato, the founder and chief executive of Oodle, a site for searching
    online classified listings more quickly.

"The answer is, ‘They could, and they’re probably thinking about it,
but they can’t do everything and do it well,’ " Mr. Donato said. "Or at
    least I’m hoping they can’t."

Oodle offers online job listings for free on a localized basis, sort of like Craigslist. I love his "Or at least I’m hoping they can’t" comment. I can just smell the fear. Can’t you?

No doubt as sites like Indeed, Yahoo! HotJobs and SimplyHired race to improve their vertical job search offerings against each other, the reality of Google waiting in the shadows must be ominous.

If you care at all about search, it’s a worthwhile read. Frankly, if you’re in the recruitment space, you should learn to love search as soon as possible if you haven’t already. Love it or hate it, it’s growing in importance … for better or worse.
