If rankings in Yahoo! search are important to you (and they should be) and you’re listed in the Yahoo! Directory, then you’ll be glad to know that Yahoo! has ceased listing your directory site title in preference for your site’s own title.

Let me explain. Let’s say you have a site called ReallyPhatJobs.com. Then let’s say you were listed in the Yahoo! Directory as "Really Phat Jobs." (They choose how you’re labeled, by the way.)

Previously, Yahoo! would have listed your site in its search results as "Really Phat Jobs." They controlled the message.

Now, let’s say ReallyPhatJobs.com’s real site title, as determined by its <title> tag (the descriptive text at the very top of your browser), is "Search Jobs and Employment Opportunities Online at ReallyPhatJobs." Today, that is what Yahoo! is showing in its results.

You control the message. Much better.

Your site’s <title> tags are important for many reasons. One reason is their ability to help you cut through the clutter of the other sites listed on a search engine’s results pages and get clicked. Until now, Yahoo! had made that strategy difficult for sites listed in its directory, but no more.
