Google doesn't like CRAPPY directories. If they didn't like directories, as you proclaim, they wouldn't have one of their own (http://www.google.com/dirhp). Purchasing what you're calling a "back link" will do nothing for your PR if the link comes from a directory full of other links and the content surounding the link isn't relevant to the link's destination.
