According to a recent Pew Internet and American Life Project based on data gathered by comScore Media Metrix, Craigslist is the undisputed, Grand Poobah of Classifieds.

In the report, as featured in The New York Times titled "Great for Craigslist but Not for Newspapers" (free registration), Craigslist is said to have seen a 165 percent increase in traffic from a year ago, representing 9 million users.

Wow.

Overall, users of online classifieds increased by 80 percent. Another wow.

Moreover, here are the top online classifieds sites (traffic volume) in September 2005:

* CRAIGSLIST.ORG
* Trader Publishing Company
* CARS.COM
* APARTMENTS.COM
* Abracat Property
* HOMESCAPE.COM
* PUPPYDOGWEB.COM
* LIVEDEAL.COM
* Tribe Networks, Inc.
* RegionalHelpWanted.com Sites
* Yahoo! Classifieds
* USCITY.NET
* BACKPAGE.COM
* MySpace Classifieds
* HOOBLY.COM

I’ll let you draw your own conclusions from the list above, but it doesn’t bode well for the print folks.

Also, what the heck is PuppyDogWeb? Obviously a lot of people know, but I’m not one of them.
