Search engine optimization icon Andy Beal has an interview with locally focused online classifieds aggregator Oodle today. If you’re not familiar with Oodle, think Craigslist meets Indeed meets your local newspaper.
Good stuff. Click here to checkout the full interview.
Some highlights:
On Google Base: The business model for
classifieds has long been poised for change – from a broadcast
advertising model (with upfront fees) to a direct marketing model
(where one pays for performance). However, existing players won’t
change without a major threat to force the issue. Google Base is that
threat.
On the future of print: There will always be the coffee shop browsing audience (people flipping through papers looking for jobs and apartments).
On Oodle’s Future: In terms of competing with larger search engines, we’re making the bet
that by focusing on classifieds we can provide an application that
better addresses needs of consumers … over the course of 2006, Oodle will look less like a search engine and
more like an application for classifieds that’s anchored in search.
From where I sit, Oodle has its work cut out for it. From a simple positioning and branding standpoint, it’s going to be extremely tough for a start-up to stake a claim to the local online classifieds space with the head start Craigslist enjoys. Best of luck to the Oodle team.
