I talked with JobCentral’s Bill Warren today about the now-infamous New York Times article. He asked me to share his response. Of course, I agreed.
Here ya’ go:
This memo is to clarify the facts and business relationships mentioned in the January 15, 2006 New York Times article:
"More Jobs Being Found Online, but that Doesn’t Mean It’s Easy” (free registration)
– by Barbara Whitaker
The National Labor Exchange that was mentioned in the article is a low-cost resume database that is free to job seekers and to DirectEmployers’ member companies. Non-member companies will pay an annual $25.00 registration fee and will have unlimited resume access.
In addition to providing employment information and assisting job seekers with typical career decisions, it will provide outplacement and career services for displaced workers and company-to-company networking capabilities for labor force management.
It is no more or no less than this. Google Base, SimplyHired, and Indeed have no association with the National Labor Exchange database which is a service of JobCentral.
Consistent with the New York Times article, and in its continuing quest to help member-employers use the Internet more efficiently and effectively, DirectEmployers Association will announce this week that:
a) Member company jobs from the DirectEmployers Search Engine (http://directemployers.jobcentral.com) and JobCentral (www.jobcentral.com) will be available via RSS feed to Indeed and will appear on the Indeed (www.indeed.com) web site.
b) Member company jobs from the DirectEmployers Search Engine (http://directemployers.jobcentral.com) and JobCentral will be available via RSS feed to Google Base and will appear on the Google Base (http://base.google.com) web site.
c) Member company jobs from the DirectEmployers Search Engine (http://directemployers.jobcentral.com) and JobCentral will be available via RSS feed to SimplyHired and will appear on the SimplyHired (www.simplyhired.com) web site.
d) Job Central has partnered with SimplyHired to provide access to over four million job listings indexed by the SimplyHired.com search engine. These additional results will be made available via the “Search the Web” tab on the JobCentral search results page.
Job seekers who click on “Search the Web” will see job search results from the the SimplyHired.com database, and the page will have a SimplyHired logo which clearly states “additional results provided by SimplyHired.”
- Although no companies have done so, DirectEmployers’ member companies may opt out of any or all of these transactions.
Unfortunately, some people inferred from the article that “…they are teaming up…” meant some kind of “partnership”, “joint venture” or even “conspiracy” between the parties mentioned. This is not the case. There is no “partnership”, “joint venture”, “conspiracy” or other actual or implied relationship between the parties other than what is outlined above.
Please contact me at your convenience if you have questions or if you need additional information or clarification.

hopefully bill’s note clarifies the situation; i believe the NYT will also be issuing a correction / clarification on the previous story.
note there *is* a partnership between SimplyHired and JobCentral (only, not GoogleBase or Indeed)), which we provide further details about here:

Cudos to Bill for stepping up so quickly and correcting the misinformation. I’m sure that he would have preferred a better way to start the week.
