Great Forbes article on the vertical search phenomonon.
Quotes from the job search sector:
"Vertical search takes search a step further
by enabling individuals to easily one-stop search for and find
specialized content germane to a specific industry vertical, such as
jobs, apartments and real estate, across multiple sites and content
sources," said Jason Goldberg, the CEO of Jobster, a vertical
site that focuses on finding jobs. "New innovations in vertical search
enable consumers to find the content they need faster and more
efficiently than ever before."

Paul Forster, co-founder of vertical
employment site Indeed.com, says it’s really about providing superior
value to consumers. While his competitors restrict job seekers to those
jobs that recruiters and hiring companies have paid to post, he wants
to put the job seeker first.
"They tell us everyday that they love
Indeed.com," said Forster. "They are finding jobs they otherwise
wouldn’t have found and we are saving them a lot of time in their
online job search. So, traffic to our site has been growing
exponentially, mainly through word-of-mouth and discussion of Indeed in
the media and on blogs."

Biggest challenge:
With vertical search, by definition, you need
to go to one engine for jobs, another for travel, and another for
business supplies. I think the results at these
vertical search engines have to be significantly superior to Google and
Yahoo! for consumers to overcome that inconvenience.
