‘battling free: a guide to fending off craigslist and google’ by joel cheesman
January 23rd, 2006
It was initially a blog that somehow turned into my first e-book.
The question I asked myself was, How can a job board - or any traditional online classifieds site - compete against the growing omnipresence of Google and other search engines, as well as Craigslist (or Kijiji for my non-U.S. readers)?
The result: My first e-book, Battling Free: A Guide to Fending Off Craigslist and Google, available now at BattlingFree.com.
It’s a collection of over 25 ideas for online classified sites of all kinds to create revenue around online content, such as jobs. I’m admittedly biased, but I believe it’s required reading for any job site in existence. Just one good tip from this e-book will pay for itself many times over.
At a minimum, it’ll spark healthy conversation in any business concerned about the emergence of free online classifieds. Any business concerned about Battling Free.
In addition, anyone purchasing the book will have access to a Google Group dedicated to discussing new and creative revenue generating strategies in the face of commoditized job, real estate, auto or whatever-
for-sale listings.

Hi Joel,
Cool idea! Perhaps you intended a double meaning when selecting the book title? Instead of providing the content in your blog (free), you packaged it for sale.
How about keeping us posted on your sales volume? Converting blog traffic into revenue seems to be a hot topic.
Keep up the great work!

Can’t get anything past you, Bob … yes, it seemed a little counter productive to release this book free of charge, considering the content. Plus, one of my tips is to provide content that saleable.
