In a wave that’s sure to have online marketers - both legit and evil - crying in frustration and scared to death, the technology that gives us our innoculation against viruses and keeps us warm with firewall protection now has a new offering: Anonymous Surfing.

According to a product description by Zone Labs: “Anonymous Surfing hides your IP address so online snoops are unable to track the sites you visit and build profiles on your Internet activities. By redirecting your Web traffic through our secure servers, your online identity is protected whether you are at home, on the road or on a wireless network.”

Online marketers and search engines like Google rely heavily on surfing data to better understand their visitors and track behavior. Doing so allows for customized search results and buying experiences, to name a few. By anonymizing a users online activities, this becomes impossible (to my knowledge) and puts a lot of sites, services and agencies in a very bad predicament.

If software like this becomes as prevalent as anti-virus or firewall, online marketing is no better than slapping a billboard ad on the side of the road and hoping for the best.
