nursing job candidates and search engines
June 1st, 2006
Nurses don’t use the Web to find jobs, right? Let alone use search engines to do so. Not so fast. Consider the number* of Internet searches done in the last 12 months for the following keyphrases:
- nursing jobs - 1.6 million searches
- nurse jobs - 1.1 million
- RN jobs - 57,000
- jobs nursing - 22,000
- registered nurse jobs - 19,000
- jobs in nursing - 12,000
And that’s just a sampling. If nurses don’t use the Web or search engines to find jobs, then who is doing these searches? Just curious.
* Estimates, including data from a variety of search engines, including Google, Yahoo! and MSN.

Recruiter’s and Hiring Managers looking for the most popular job boards to post on ;-)

You’d be amazed at how many hospital HR directors are still hooked on newspapers to recruit nurses. I’ve given up trying to convince them to add online posting to their recruiting efforts. They just dont believe nurses are online! Such narrow minded thinking will only serve to exacerbate the issue.

Yes, Hospital HR Directors still believe in Santa Claus and that is the dumb reason they post in print, be it newspapers or magazines. Go to any Doctors office and look for the magazine racks or tables in the waitingroom. I actually took a day away from my healthcare recruiting business to find out what manner of advertising doctors aided and abetted in by buying and then displaying magazines and newspapers in their practice. First I scoped out the patient profiles, which was a mix of young and old, male & female. The newspapers were in disarray with the crossword puzzle page seeing the most action. Magazines were out of date by months and this being the last week of May ‘06 when I performed this non-scientific chore, a majority of these magazines were ‘05 editions. Yes I saw magazines in these lobbys and waiting rooms that catered to healthcare and Hospitals were actually advertising for all manner of help. They were thoughtful enough to list an email address & contact name however. On to the library where I found ‘updated’ information with much of the same except in this case I viewed regional newspapers that were replete with jobs but NO email address and these hiring authorities were asking you to apply for the job by “please mail resumes to this address.”
What the hell are these HR people thinking?
