topix.net (and their deep-pocket newspaper owners) enters the field of free classifieds

Newspaper-owned Topix.net is quietly getting into the free online classifieds game. As you may recall, Topix is basically a bunch of newspapers who hope they can create an online presence competitive to Craigslist, Google Base, Oodle, etc.

First glimpse in my local market of Cleveland shows a pretty sad collection of jobs. I didn’t look at any other markets, so if you look at your own and see a mass collection of content, let me know.

That said, sad or not, the money behind these guys and what they’re capable of is nothing to laugh at.

The slide toward free job listings continues.

We’ve had about 6,000 listings entered in the month and a half that the system has been live, but they’re spread out over the site so the concentration in any one place is not great. Check out our blog for more about the thinking behind this product.
