google checkout and internet recruiting

A lot has already been written about Google’s new payment system, dubbed Checkout. No doubt it’ll be a hot topic for months to come. My own early experience as a consumer has been very positive.

I love the one-click checkout functionality in contrast to PayPal’s login-everytime process. Retailers are sure to appreciate Checkout’s lack of monthly fees vs. Verisign.

But what does it mean for Internet recruiting?

For starters, if you’re a job board that doesn’t support an online payment process, for whatever reason, get your head out of 1998. There’s no excuse not to offer Google Checkout as an option to post a job, access your resume database, whatever.

Next, and maybe more importantly, Checkout gives you a chance to standout in your pay-per-click campaigns. As you’ll notice in the image to the right, advertisers featuring Checkout as a payment option, get a green shopping cart icon attached to their ads.

Time will tell, but I’m pretty confident those ads will be more popular. And more popular PPC ads get higher rankings – no extra cost.

So jump on this bandwagon before anyone else does. E-commerce sites are sure to leverage this option very soon, but the online jobs space should take longer. Now’s your chance to cut through the clutter. And if you currently don’t offer something for sale, start.
