net-temps dive into vertical job search provides likely glimpse into future

Aside from Google Base, 2005 was the year that vertical job search engines like Indeed made a big splash in the Internet recruiting landscape. In the same year, Yahoo! HotJobs decided to tryout being a ‘little bit pregnant’ by integrating vertical search into their business-as-usual, pay-to-post model.

For what will 2006 be remembered?

If the rumors are true, it could be the year that established job boards dipped their feet into vertical job search by launching separate brands (or retreads) aside for their usual bread-and-butter to take advantage of the phenomenon.

You already know about Monster rumored to go vertical by reviving FlipDog. Well, now it’s Net-Temps.

If you visit SearchJobs.com, you’ll notice a vertical job search engine that doesn’t reveal much about its owners on the surface. The About page is vague and their Terms effectively keep things on the down low. However, do a WHOIS search, and you’ll find that Net-Temps is behind the site. Their own openings receive preferential placement in search results as well.

Things that make you go, Hmmm, right?

Word is Net-Temps is launching this vertical in an effort to, um, see if this vertical thing is for real. Unlike HotJobs, they’re most likely launching as a separate brand to 1) keep their primary business going for as long as possible, 2) create a secondary revenue opportunity and traffic resource and 3) well, if it doesn’t work out, no harm done to the parent brand.

Smart money is on more grey-haired job boards following suit. Monster’s FlipDog should not be too far behind.

In light of one rather large stick sitting in the back offices of the U.S. Patent Office, summer in the Northern Hemisphere looks to get a lot hotter. Grab yourself a cold cocktail and enjoy.
