One of my clients, Background Information Services, recently asked me to oversee their .jobs domain purchase, site creation and optimization. They specialize in employment background checks, but in addition to their core competency, the company is always looking for sales people in Chicago and Cleveland.

As a result, I set-up www.bis.jobs to target users searching sales jobs in Cleveland, Ohio and Chicago.

In less than 3 weeks, the results have been quite promising. MSN Search is typically the engine that indexes and ranks sites the fastest. Yahoo! and Google follow, usually in that order. On MSN, BIS.jobs maintains the following rankings (as of 7/17/06):

  • No. 1 – “sales jobs in Cleveland”
  • No. 2 – “Cleveland Ohio sales jobs”
  • No. 5 – “Chicago sales jobs”
  • No. 1 – “sales jobs in Chicago”

Sample results page on MSN.

In aggregate, the keyphrases targeted for this campaign encompass approximately 2,000 searches annually. Not a ton, but the traffic is very targeted, and clicks from organic results are free. That’s what we call a nice return on investment.

Think a few hospitals around the country would utilize the .jobs domain if it meant helping them rank well for key terms around “nursing”? I sure do.

To date, and by design, I have done little to no optimization on this site. I say ‘by design’ because I was curious what doing next to nothing would result in. I have my answer. (Keep in mind www.bis.jobs is ranking over well established job sites, some of which are specifically targeted to sales and have been around for years – all in less than a month.)

I’m excited to see what happens once we really start going to work on this site, and how the efforts pan out on Google and Yahoo! Nothing is concrete at this point and algorithms are always changing, but this initial success is a great first sign for direct employers who obtain, use and optimize their .jobs domain correctly.
