insulating your blog from comment spam

July 31st, 2006

Blog comment spam sucks. But you’re not defenseless.

If your blog has a unique domain, like Cheezhead.com, as opposed to a subdomain like myblog.typepad.com, here’s what you can do to fight comment spam. (These steps are most effective with Wordpress users, where comment spam is especially out of control.)

  1. Obtain your FTP information. This will be a username/password that your Webmaster should have.
  2. Create an .htaccess file if one doesn’t already exist. Again, your Webmaster should be able to hook this up, but checkout FreeWebmasterHelp for further directions.
  3. Each bit of blog comment spam you get should come with an IP address attached that should be found with each comment. It should also be contained in e-mail alerts you get with new comments. An IP address looks something like this: 85.186.216.198.
  4. Once you get the IP address(es), go to your .htaccess file and add the following command: deny from 212.56.202.147. (Your number should be different, and remember to add the period at the end of the spamming IP address.) Each IP address you want to ban should have its own line.

I’m not a programmer by trade, but following the steps above have helped me rid my own private blogosphere of comment spam. For more information, checkout Wordpress Help.
