Ouch! AOL has announced that it will be laying off 5,000 workers by year’s end. The culprit?

On Wednesday, America Online, a unit of Time Warner Inc. unveiled its plan to offer e-mail, software and other products to broadband users free of charge — its latest move to jump-start a turnaround at the Internet service and content provider.

Battling free sure can be a bitch.
