For the record my worst job was McDonald’s. I was 16-years-old, cookin’ up quarter pounders and McDLTs. (Anyone remember those?) Here’s to keepin’ the hot side hot, and the cool side cool.

Worst job I ever had? Actually, the only bad job that I ever had. When I was 15, I worked as a dishwasher for Trapper John’s, a casual dining restaurant in Winnipeg. I quit after four days to work for Shopper’s Drug Mart as a stock clerk. I’ve never worked in any other restaurant so I hope that dishwashers in other restaurants didn’t see what I saw, but the last straw for me was when one of the cooks accidentally dropped a lobster tail on the dirty, soapy floor. He was about to toss it in the garbage when the manager told him that lobster tails are too expensive to throw out and instructed the cook to run it under hot water and put it on the plate. My family had enjoyed eating at that restaurant until then. We never went again.

Very briefly in tenth grade, I worked at a local movie theater for a very overweight guy who named Jim who insisted that everyone call him “Mr. West.”

Mr. West would let his jet-black miniature dachshund roam around in the dark theater and crap everywhere. When I wasn’t cleaning bathrooms, it was my job to clean up his dog’s crap between shows.

Mr. West also insisted that I be the guy to go from row to row with the flashlight and demand that teenagers to take their feet off of the seats in front of them. This worked out okay until some of the local high school football players threatened to beat me up after the show.

    I tendered my resignation forthwith.

My worst job was when I was 15 and I was a Kennel Ward for a veterinary clinic. I liked my employers, but it was the job itself that stunk. My responsibilities were to clean the animals’ cages, feed them, bathe them, medicate them, walk the dogs, and clean up after them. I was attacked on a couple of occasions by aggressive animals and I hated puppies and old dogs for awhile (their cages always had special surprises in them!) I made $4.75/hour.
