If you haven’t yet, go pick up the new Business 2.0, cover story “Blogging for Dollars.” In it, they outline their 7 keys to success (my comments in parentheses).

  • Focus intently on a narrow niche (yeah, something like Internet recruiting would work).
  • Set up your blog so that each post gets its own permanent URL (search engine friendly URLs rule; stay away from question marks).
  • Think of your blog as a database (make sure a search engine spider can access all your pages, and don’t have any page more than three links deep if you can help it).
  • Blog frequently and regularly (they recommend “at least half a dozen posts every weekday before lunchtime.” Yikes! I try for One A Day … like the vitamin, but without the iron).
  • Use striking images in your posts (ahh, pictures: effective communication since 7 million B.C.).
  • Enable comments and interact with readers (this is easier said than done considering blog spam and the amount of hours in a day).
  • Make friends with other bloggers (”a drop of honey catches more flies than a gallon of gall,” but it may not get you as much traffic).

Now go forth and blog! According to the Business 2.0 article, “there’s gold in them thar hills!”
