A recent search I did for “jobs in Chicago” on Yahoo! served up the following results below the Top Ten:

Pretty interesting, huh?
Yahoo! has been talking about leveraging its social network to enhance search results for awhile. It’s a clear differentiator from Google’s ‘technology rules’ approach. However, this is the first instance I’ve seen in regards to job search.
Of course, as this type of human intervention becomes more prevalent in search results, and thus becomes an effective means of driving traffic, the spammers will come out of the woodwork. For now, however, it looks like a sound strategy worth exploring.

Great article in September Wired – “Spam + Blog = Trouble” – about the proliferation of splogging and sportals, justified as search engine marketing. It would appear that social network spamming is up next.

Interesting? Yes.
Already crawling with the spam? Oh yeah.
Did a quick search about a week ago in one of my areas and found a few great looking leads for people asking about work in a particular field.
Of course, in looking at them closer, they’d already been bombarded with responses from people that needed help moving $4,068,946.79 from a bank account in India or that were looking for people to add to their sales and marketing pyramid program.
That isn’t to say that someone didn’t just email a few of them directly and there were some happy endings. So I’m not giving up entirely…. but I am continuing to lobby that spammers should be publicly flogged.
