google testing related searches

While recently doing some research, I came across the following on Google at the end of the organic listings for “internships”:

Google related searches

No doubt this is just a test right now, as I fail to see the same for all other test searches, but if this takes hold, I have the following initial thoughts:

  • This will be good for searchers in better funneling their way to a more appropriate query. A “don’t make me think” solution, if you will.
  • From an SEO point of view, 1) it makes optimizing for “related” searches (or tail terms) much more important, and 2) it becomes a great guide for what “related” terms sites should focus on, because more users will be going to those results and those are most likely the most searched terms secondary to the main term.

These tests are no stranger to Google, but I expect more like this down the road as search competition heats up and Google spends more time perfecting its bread-and-butter as opposed to the less fruitful “see what sticks” strategies that were so popular in ‘06.
