January 15 is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in the US. I encourage you to invest some time for reflection on his life-and-message, or learn about his impact on society if you know little or nothing. It’s much more than the “I have a dream” speech.

Although I wasn’t around during his life and times, I remember reading a few books on him and his teachings in college and being impacted in such a positive way. To me at least, his words seemed less about black-and-white than they were about wrong and right.

I also remember thinking how far I had to go in my own life to even come close to fulfilling his vision of love, understanding and how the world should be and people should treat one another. I still I have a long way to go, as does our nation as a whole, methinks sometimes:

A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual doom.

Happy Birthday, MLK.
