The BBC is reporting that popular and Google-owned video site YouTube is planning to begin sharing ad revenue with publishers.
Publishers will be “rewarded for creativity,” and the new offering will:
… use a mixture of adverts, including short clips shown ahead of the actual film.
I thought it might go something like this. My guess is they’ll allow publishers to opt-in to putting ads on their own creations. This way, YouTube and Google can free themselves of blame when ads start showing up on videos. “Hey, the author chose to put an ad in his video. Not us.” According to the article, ads may be only 3 seconds in length.
My next four curiosities are 1) Protecting copyright, which the article touches upon and 2) Adoption. I’m sure businesses will do this, but will it hit a critical mass? 3) Access, as in, will ads be uploaded via AdWords / AdSense, YouTube or both. Using Google’s platform helps speed up the addition of video advertising in Google’s ad network, and 4) Targeting, so a local advertiser can put their message in front of their exact market, for example.
