I came across the the following banner ads today when doing a search for “java” on Simply Hired:

Banner ads? This is in sharp contrast to how Indeed and even Jobster present their job search results, staying clear of, and even bashing, banner ads.
On the heels of the Job-a-matic launch, which showcases Simply Hired’s ability to process job postings, as well as the shotgunning of resumes introduced last year, has Simply Hired jumped the shark and left the category of vertical job search engine?

“Once a job board has “jumped the shark”, fans sense a noticeable decline in quality or feel the job board has undergone too many changes to retain its original charm.”
Quality is still the same i guess and there’s not much that has been changed- for me a “nah”. And whats wrong with making some bucks?

Joel, Didn’t you say “The greatest risk in life is to not take any”? Much like your JobThread, SimplyCheezJobs, UCheez, and a litany of other CheezRisks they’re trying something new to see if it resonates with jobseekers and new perspective advertisers. I’m not sure this risk involves a shark just yet.

Since the banners are related to the content and add some nice color to the page in a non-intrusive manner, I think they go hand-in-hand with the search results and make sense.
However, as you had pointed out in previous examples, when a job board starts serving out Miller Light ads, then we got a problem. And since they’re not weighting the search results to give higher placement to companies who are purchasing banners (2 Java jobs show up from JobCircle.com on position 4 and 6 and we don’t buy banners), I don’t have a problem with it. I’d bet that jobseekers probably don’t either.
