Popular social networking site Facebook claims to be “the No. 1 photo-sharing site in the U.S.” They currently allow an unlimited number of photo uploads.
MySpace apparently has taken note and wants to make a dent in the space. While recently uploading a few new pics on my MySpace page, I noticed the following update and promotion:
As the banner says, the number of photos users can upload has increased from like 10 to 300, in relation to the upcoming film title, you guessed it, 300.
Nice move on two counts:
- If you’re going to upgrade, might as well tie it into a revenue-generating promotion.
- More pics means more cash from banner advertising via page views.
And I was just thinking the other day, “MySpace could really use more page views to help out their traffic numbers.”

Kudos to Murdoch and the boys. The 300 will probably do very well in the theaters, at least among the graphic novel crowd. Not that MySpace is suffering…

MySpace is suffering. They have loads of traffic and their revenues are pretty respectable, but they’re losing boat loads of money. If you’re a user or a client, you need to be concerned. Businesses which lose as much money as MySpace is don’t stand pat. Some of the changes may be for the positive and for that we should all be thankful. But the fear is that the changes that they’ll need to make in order to turn red into black ink are changes that users and/or clients won’t want to see.
Allowing users to upload 300 rather than 10 photos should increase both revenues and expenses. Hopefully it will increase revenues more than expenses. But these are incremental steps and they need to make significant steps quickly. It should be interesting to watch. There are a lot of smart people there who are well aware of these issues.

They may be able to equal the amount of photos as Facebook, but because of Facebook’s capabilities and coding with the RSS news feeds you can much more easily actually SHARE photos with your friends. MySpace takes at least 3-4 clicks to get to the photos. Login>View Friends>View Profile>View Photos. (If you don’t get an error.) And you could have done all that clicking to find that your friend didn’t even have new pictures up. As apposed to seeing thumbnails of the images as soon as you login Facebook. But hey, if it boosts revenue for them, all the best to MyS.
