Love ‘em or hate ‘em, banner ads are here to stay for awhile.
Accepting of this fact, I’m always intrigued by the latest-and-greatest methods to get Web surfers to click. The jobs sector, in particular, is a tricky business, as the argument for “everyone’s a job seeker” can sometimes equal not-so-targeted advertising. You’re just as likely to see a banner ad for a job site on MySpace as you are CNN.com, for example.
The banner ad from Monster in this post struck me as one of the more clever attempts at cutting through the clutter.
Advertising that invites user participation tends to perform better than others, so I’d be surprised if this wasn’t one of the more effective campaigns for Monster Worldwide right now.
I found it on MySpace. It leads to this page, which provides the answer, but also immediately lays out Monster’s job search functionality.
Targeted? Maybe. Effective? Probably.
UPDATE: A reader sends us this site, archiving job-related banner ads. Thanks: http://adverlicio.us/taxonomy/term/377

I just love the fact that, on the landing page, there are 4 cities in the “top 5″
1. Phoenix
2. Seattle
3. Houston
4. Denver

There was a banner ad-game I saw on http://www.peekvid.com recently that was trying to get people to “TICKLE THE FAT KID UNTIL HE PUKES!” Wow, I hadn’t seen one so, uh blatantly wrong and effed-up since the “SHOOT THE (Turban-wearing) terrorists and get a gift card/iPod” or whatever… whackness, indeed. But does it work?…
