Unless I get an exclusive or something really blows my hair back, I typically hate blogging about news releases. Any chucklehead can repost a news release, and many do. Then it’s a race to see who get it on Recruiting.com first. Puh-lease! Give me some meat.

Anyway, maybe because it’s Friday or because it’s the home opener or because it’s snowing in April (and I mean really snowing), I felt compelled to comment on the recent name change of Market10 to Jobfox. I’d link to the news, but I’m sure you’ve seen it by now.

Our mission is to create the first online job site people love, said Rob McGovern, CEO and Chairman of Jobfox. Today’s Jobfox site squarely hits the mark. Jobfox is reversing the interaction model between employers and candidates.

Yeah, I nodded off too. But the name change, above all else, caught my attention. Unfortunately, the release doesn’t go into why the company is rebranding – which is no easy task – and it’s not as obvious as “Hey, we’re changing our name from Toledo Jobs to Jobfox because we’re going national, and Toledo really doesn’t speak to Houstonians.”

It’s also an interesting selection considering the confusion with FireFox, the best web browser ever made by humans. Or the Fox. And does being a new job site with “job” in your name just get you lost in the clutter of, well, most everyone else in this space? At least Market 10 didn’t suffer from this problem.

Eh, it’s probably just me and my B.A., but what do you kids think? Vote now.

From a marketing standpoint, JobFox is better than Market10. At least it you can figure out what it is, more or less, from the name. (…said the guy who named his site FRACAT)

However, you’re dead on with the “lost in the clutter” comment. After seeing the site, I understand why they picked it (you are the “JobFox” – you’re being hunted!), but there have to be some better choices.

But, hey, it’s not like they spent $150K or so to get the new name. Oh, they did? Nevermind…

Better Name? I don’t think so – I didn’t like Market10, I’m not too fond of “JobFox”; Whateva.

The important thing is that its way too limited in scope to be of much value. A couple of cities, you put your info out there – it matches you up with jobs – sorta – then tells you where you do or don’t match – sorta. Too limited – does notlive up to the marketing – worst thing possible.

I always thought it was Under Promise – Over Deliver – maybe I got confused.

Somehow this job fox thing always reminds me of those silly fox ads on TV where they try to sell you your own business or something… i say change the name!
