With what appears to be no organized optimization strategy whatsoever, Union Pacific is racking up some nice organic rankings on Google with their .jobs domain.
In this example, they rank Top 5 for “railroad jobs,” a term Wordtracker currently estimates at 252 search queries per day.

Joel, Union Pacific has built over 400 content specific pages within their www.unionpacific.jobs. To your point, I agree their motivation likely has more to do with their own hiring needs and online employment strategy vs. pure search engine manipulation. Nice to see that the effort & display of quality content can still be ‘organically’ rewarded. There is an intersection between “online employment strategy” and low cost traffic acquisition as a result of concerted search engine optimization. Effort is required. Effort will be rewarded. It’s competitive but at the end of the day, content is king. Strategies that can best gain recognition from the search providers for employment related content, I will leave to experts such as yourself. :)

Joel,
In your opinion, how much does the “.jobs” suffix help here?

Any indication if MSN and Yahoo! follow the same algorithm?

I’m surprised you haven’t picked up on Google booting CareerBuilder from their index. You won’t find them #1 anymore for any important keywords.
