Jason’s responses during this interview sounded rehearsed. While I was listening, I could picture him at home (feeling unenergised) in front of the mirror in the bathroom, practising ;-)
Wait… hasn’t Yahoo hotjobs taken over nearly 500 papers? I know they have almost all of California including all of the greater Bay Area and So. Cal, not to mention the rest of the nation, I dont think they have Sacramento though. Monster tells me they are taking there share as well. I seriously doubt CB thinks this is great for business. Does Yahoo own all of HotJobs or a minor equity stake like MSN in CB? im not sure. I think CB paid MSN for that partnership right? So it wasnt MSN investing in CB?… this stuff in confusing me. someone please explain.
Joel, way to ask the tough questions…. obviosly he was ready for it but good job anyway.
CB had paid MSN in the past for that relationship, however, with the recent investment by MSN into CB, that is not so much the case any further.
As far as the value of newspapers in the grand scheme of things, I see little value in any of the big three partnering with them, other than local name recognition. I mean, how much traffic do you think even the biggest paper sites generate for the online boards? The bigger thing to consider is the papers ability to sell that online posting in addition to the print posting.
So many companies want to shy away from the papers, and a lot are. However, when you have the ability to post an ad in the paper AND on CB, MON, or HJ, why not?
It’s funny too see MON & HJ chasing all the papers that CB doesn’t want anymore - for whatever the reason - as CB shifts focus to other partnerships. Also funny is how MON & HJ have recently revamped their websites and both have taken a striking familiarity to CB in either look (MON) or content (HJ)

That’s my 2 cents.
