So, this press release falls into my metaphorical lap touting a job board specifically for Jews in New York City and I say to myself, “OK, diversity has gone too far this time.”

I read further:

Unlike other job boards, every job posting on the NEW YORK JOB BOARD TARGETS JEWISH JOB SEEKERS AND EMPLOYERS NY Jewish Job Board.com, is highly optimized for search engines such as Google, Yahoo and MSN and allows job postings to be shared and syndicated to sites such as Digg and Technorati. This gives the web site huge exposure that will allow every job to rank high within search engine results.

Hmm, a new site touting it’s “highly optimized for search engines.” Now they’ve got my attention. I read further:

Instead of a per-ad fee which makes the posting of multiple ads cost-prohibitive for small and mid-size organizations, NY Jewish Job Board.com is subscription-based and allows for the posting of unlimited ads for a very low monthly fee.

Monthly fees aren’t anything new, but it strikes me as an interesting way for job sites way down the tail to make some ongoing income, small bite by small bite.

Time to check out the site.

And here’s the real reason I felt most compelled to post: The entire job board is running on free blog solution Wordpress.

Now, I know this isn’t the first job board running on a blogging software (save the me-too comments). It is, however, the only one I’ve seen so self-serve in nature. Jobs in Pods, for example, relies on the ownership to add content. And I know it’s merely an arm of Trellis Associates, a New York-based staffing and consulting company.

But, I’ve yet to see one so well done. It was just such a Duh! moment.

Duh, it’s search engine friendly because it’s a blog, and users can search jobs by category, keyword and location, because it’s, well, a blog. Employers sign-up through the Wordpress platform, pay a monthly fee and post to their heart’s content. They can manage their postings like blog posts.

Man, I’m dumb. I think this is where that forest-for-the-trees saying comes into play. I get a decent amount of people ask me who they should get to power their job board. If the shoe fits, Wordpress is my new answer.

Wordpress -is- awesome–we are running about half of our university sites with the software right now. You can download it as a server solution and run your own customizer version.

One correction: if they are running a commercial site on the wordpress.com servers, it isn’t free. You have to pay to have a commercial site. Personal blogs, like mine, are free.

If you think the Jewish job boards are an issue, how about all the Christian ones? They also exist, you know. Are those also “diversity gone too far”? :D

The solution is great - but I’d have to say that Typepad is a superior platform for job posting, and also works as a stand alone solution.

I see these sites as the real competition for job boards. After all - you can not make your job postings free.

WordPress is cool - Drupal is cooler. A bit more complicated, but tons of plugins for this very type of thing.

Hey now, I am the guy that developed the job site for the New York Jewish Job guys and I have worked with drupal, and I have to say that it is not cooler imho *because* it is more complicated.

If you like drupal, you would LOVE EZPublish :)http://www.bms-uk.com/
