It didn’t even take a week from the time of my post from last week concerning regular background checks for current employees to be validated with an example of why this practice makes sense. The Northwest Arkansas Times reported that a school teacher who passed a pre-employment background check was recently arrested for possessing multiple images of child pornography. I doubt the school actually engaged in follow up background checks, but they found out due to the publicity that arose from the incident. Again, this is an egregious example. The alleged crime doesn’t have to be so heinous. In fact if it was something like shoplifting, it would have never made the papers and the only way an employer would have found out would have been word of mouth or an updated background check.
