HotJobs has a Facebook application.

Lots of buzz on the Web, but here are some highlights in case you missed it:

  • See where friends have worked and if any of those companies have job listings posted on Yahoo! HotJobs
  • Vote for friends on light-hearted career-related questions like “Who is ‘most likely to quit the corporate world and move to Tibet to become a monk’
  • Tag friends so everyone knows what friends are “like” in and out of the office
  • By listing companies in the “Companies I Heart” job seekers have a unique ability to target companies they want to work for and “catch the eye” of employers

Hats off for being No. 2 of the Big Three (CareerBuilder’s app) to dive into Facebook. The key from here is promotion. If HotJobs gets the word out via their primary site as well as maybe leverage their own search engine when users search job-related keyphrases, they should be able to add members pretty quickly.

If, on the other hand, they just hope it takes off on its own virally, this may be wasted time. Employment apps just don’t compete with vampire and zombie apps very well. What are ya’ gonna do?

Indeed’s Facebook app, for example, has a measly 26 daily users to date. Simply Hired, in contrast, actively promotes their app on SH job search results, and has over 4,000 users. Do you think employed professionals will use it? Seems like it would be absolutely great for college students, but most professionals want a little more privacy in their job searches. Might be a bit unprofessional to have an app on your facebook page (since co-workers are often friends) that says you “heart” your biggest competitors. Might make sense to have a privacy feature where you could share that data with the employers, but not the rest of the world.
