I am a recruiter … have been for lots of years and I must admit I have never paid much attention to Labor and Employment Law. Source the top talent, assess and deliver … fast. Nothing gets in the way. Laws are just nuisance road bumps that get in the way of getting the job done. I still want to find and deliver the best talent faster than the next. But because of a personal situation I have to admit I have a new found understanding of labor law. Specifically the Americans with Disabilities Act.
A funny thing happened a few weeks ago. I live in the country West of Austin, I mean in the sticks and out here if I need to visit my neighbor I have to cross his fence and walk the pasture. Texas all the way – love it! On the fence hop back (it was 5 feet) I came down on a rock just right and broke my heel into three big pieces (the good news). Now I have shared and played the sympathy card with Joel and all my friends in the industry so much so I can see them cringe when they see I’m calling. No more stories about your surgery, steel plate and 7 screws holding your heel together.
Now I repent. I have been laid up for three weeks and have four more months of crutches, a scooter and no normal walking. Access to my office is such that I will need help getting out of my car, down the hill that is our parking lot and into the building. Yes, there is wheelchair access but it’s next to impossible for one person to handle.
So, I repent. I will always look at a buildings access from here on. I will stop and help anyone at anytime who is using a crutch, a wheelchair … anything. I have been taught a very important and valuable lesson and it appears someone up there thought this one important just for me.
So, a personal blog and not that interesting. A lot of you have been through something similar or much worse and now my heart goes out to you. For those of you who haven’t had the opportunity, I hope you don’t. Thanks goodness mine is not that bad … just enough to get my attention. And maybe yours.
