monster ireland is high on craic

October 3rd, 2007

There’s a very entertaining blog post drawing a lot of attention right now entitled, “Monster’s Irish Office Think Spamming is Acceptable.”

Well the obvious thing would be to contact the person who sent it, so I did. I rang him this afternoon. He didn’t want to hear about my complaints and was totally unrepentant. Seemingly scraping addresses from websites and using them for marketing purposes (ie. spamming) is perfectly acceptable for Monster’s staff.

Things just get better once the comments come flyin’. From Digg:

When people blogged about it, hr threatened them with legal action. Meanwhile a mysterious “Pedro” from a Monster.com IP address started leaving insulting comments about the bloggers in their blog comments.

Readers will know I too am familiar with angry Monster employees striking back via blog comments and email, believing they are anonymous when, yeah, not so much.

There’s a great rule of thumb in PR that says something like, “Never pick a fight with someone who buys ink by the barrel.” The same holds true today, except the ink has been replaced by keyboards, community and Internet connectivity.

And yes, you should Digg it. And listen to it.
