Using T-Shirts to Connect with Campus Recruits

I wood! Wood U?
Wood is Good!

These are just some of the sample slogans that are sporting up on shirts around North America. The T-shirts are part of a campaign Weyerhaeuser is putting on to spread the word about their company and to recruit students.

Rhonda Stickley, director of recruiting explains,

A little more than two years ago the recruiting team started to take steps toward improving our overall efforts to attract, develop and retain the talent we need to continue to grow our business. At the campus level we found that our name was not well known, and when it was familiar, sometimes had a negative connotation to it.

Weyhaeuser has developed a site at Y Wood U? (as in, “Why would you want to work here?”), to explain to possible candidates the benefits to work for them. Weyhaeuser is a forest products company, not only do they lumber the trees, they develop wood-based products, and replant the trees they cut down.

The Got Wood? shirts are being used to create a buzz on campuses; to get students interested in learning more about Weyhaeuser and how the company looks for innovative people to help come up with out of the box ideas. The company considers people to be their most valuable resource.

So far the shirt campaign has been a “huge success.” At this year’s North Carolina State career fair, an entire freshman class from the Paper Science Program awaited eagerly for their own shirts. They had seen other classmates wearing them and wanted their own. The Paper Science Program is one of the many programs from which Weyhaeuser recruits students for internships and entry level jobs. Matthew Lapair, one of the students in the program had this to say about the shirts,

The shirts are well made and the “Wood is Good” tagline is a good conversation starter.

When asked if he would work for Weyerhauser he had this to say,

Sure. They’re a well-run company and one of the leaders in the industry. And if they give out free shirts, it’s a constant reminder that I have some kind of relationship with the company.

Anyone thinking of working for the company can checkout their website. According to Stickley, they are specifically looking for people who are passionate about what they do, interested in growth and hold the company values. And hey, there just might be a T-shirt in it for you too.
