I love Wordpress, the open-source solution for running blogs. It’s the backbone of Cheezhead and most of my other blogs. So when I heard there was a job board solution running on Wordpress called RecruitPress, I had to investigate.

RecruitPress is a free application to create a job board built on the powerful WordPress blogging software. RecruitPress is not a plugin for WordPress. It is a group of widely available WordPress plugins and some WordPress core file modifications that you install on top of a fresh installation of WordPress. It does not embed a job board on your current blog.

Granted, with all the off-the-shelf job board software out there – some even running on Wordpress already – saying things are crowded is like calling Big Mac’s unhealthy. That said, I can tell you if I were to start a simple job site today, be it as part of a blog or a stand alone site, I’d probably be using RecruitPress.

Aside from some traditional functionality, here are a few of the reasons why:

  1. It’s free.
  2. No revenue splits.
  3. Flexible customization and control of code.
  4. Better SEO

In addition to the few reasons above, the ability to leverage the magic of plugins means adding cool functions to your job board easily and in an ongoing manner. Current examples include a PayPal plugin for easy payments and a resume uploader. There aren’t a lot, but it’s early.

Savvy job boards should be looking at plugins they can create to help build their own brand. Or at least look at putting a designer on creating a theme or two to drive the business. For example, a vertical job search engine could create a plugin to provide a backfill of jobs to complement ones posted by registered users. Better you than your competitor, right?

These are early days for RecruitPress. But I like what I see so far. We’ll keep our eyes on this one. Checkout the demo and features now.

So it’s like a build a board, huh? First Ning, now RecruitPress and I’m sure plenty of others. Where is the hard work? Now anyone can run around with any kind of social site they want for little or no capital. But it once again boils down to traffic, content and usability. Thanks for the insight Cheez.

I think the hard work comes in taking the easy systems available and actually making it work. I know that seems obvious but…. I wrote about this very thing a little while back.

What is the opinion out there on making “core modifications that you install on top of Wordpress”. Does this mean altering the core Wordpress files? Is that good, and/or sustainable through WP upgrades?

If anyone has the installer would be nice to mail it? the website is down :(

Check out WPJobAds at http://www.wpjobads.com unlike RecruitPress, this one is a true plugin and it has PayPal support out of the box.
