Facebook Social Ads – and how to best use them – is still in its infancy.

However, there are a few trends I see that may help you get the most return for your time, energy and money.

1) Provocative images. Unlike AdWords, Facebook lets you plug-in an image with your ads. Use something that will capture attention. I’m not saying to put in a bikini-clad vixen to draw attention to your ad, but at the same time, you’re not going to bore someone into checking out your promotion.

2) Provocative headlines and ad copy. And the more it relates to the Facebook experience, the better. Plug into our Facebook application, for example, is better than come visit our site.

3) No cheapskates. If you’re hoping to gain significant traction at 5 cents a click, guess again. Raise your bid amounts and watch the traffic flow.

4) Smart targeting. Just make sure you’re putting your ad in front of the right audience. Otherwise, you’re wasting money.

5) Test. Test. And test some more. Does the same ad work better with different creative? Is your ROI better with different copy? You can’t manage unless you measure, so keep tweaking till you find a sweet spot.

Facebook has recently felt some heat for its handling of Beacon, so there’s justification in questioning the future of Social Ads. I’m confident they’ll work things out over time, however, and that this ad platform will be an effective tool for any sound marketing campaign well into the future.

You pretty much have to include an image or no one will click on the ad.
