uh-oh! i’ve ticked off careerbuilder’s ‘agency of record’

Articles, Featured

I am shaking in my snowboots! CareerBuilder’s agency just called me asking for their ad to be taken off my site.

Have a listen:

Scary, huh? What should I do!?!?!?!?

Seriously, they need to call YouTube - ya’ know, the site that’s actually hosting the content. It’s not like I got past the security guards, broke into their safe and stole the thing.

And isn’t the point of advertising to, well, have people see your ad?

UPDATE: The comment below from “Takeo” calling me names and threatening me is actually from the IP address of CareerBuilder’s agency, Wieden & Kennedy. Now, that’s great PR! CareerBuilder must be proud.

you’re lame. especially for posting their message to you complete with the girls name and number included.

don’t you realize that there’s legal ramifications for posting something that you have no license to (ie. the ads), for recording and broadcasting personal communications (ie. the voicemail) without consent - not even to mention the various ethical issues regarding the private content that you made publically available.

summary, again: you’re lame. and probably going to have your ass sued.

  2. Matt Q Says:

Wow, I’d leave it up. If there is issues with the content, the video will get deleted through youtube and would just result in a broken link.

I’m not sure what the deal is and why the extra exposure is an issue. Careerbuilder should be more worried about the link through YouTube.

    Best of luck…

    Hey Takeo,

Perhaps you need to restate that comment…..you’re lame! For you to bash the cheez is uncalled for! As in typical Careerbuilder fashion, cry, cry, cry!!! WOW….lets not have another avenue to get their message out. So Takeo, what is going to happen when that same commercial is plastered all over YouTube? Is that same lady going to track all of the people down? By the way, the ad, once again, in typical careerbuilder fashion……it’s all about the negative. SHOCKER!!!

This is awesome! Go Cheez! And for the record, THE AD IS WHAT’S LAME!

you made my weekend! Careerbuilder really frustrates so many companies, nice to see someone frustrating them for once

  6. Anonymous Says:

YO Cheez….. You are now entering legend status!!!! Keep up the great work!!!

  7. Jim Kukral Says:

Awesome! Wieden & Kennedy is a PR company that REALLY cares I guess.

  8. Amie Ernst Says:

Alright Cheez! I say keep it up as well. Plus, gots to love how Takeo can’t spell! ;)

CBDR is trying to build their brand with cartoonish commercials - they should start by changing their company name. Branding 101 states: don’t name your company for what it is ie (Joe’s Garage, Jones Medical Supply, ‘careerbuilder’) Need to start with name change and total site over hall if trying to change their image as a boring job board.

BTW - as a jobseeker - CBDR is by far the worst site - cluttered with multiple listings of fin. services and insurance jobs in every town of every state. You need to scroll through 2 pages to see another company’s jobs listed (for the same date).

CareerBuilder: Over-inflated value and over-inflated ego. What a combo!

Thanks for posting and confirming my decision to take my dollars and put them elsewhere. I feel I’m now being a good corporate citizen.

  11. David Sickmiller Says:

I’m not sure what to think of the anonymous comment from a complicit IP address, but the voicemail sounded fairly polite and professional, and not lawyerly at all. They could have sent a DMCA takedown notice to your ISP and possibly had your website taken down. While the video isn’t even hosted on your site, even links to illegal content on other sites can be dangerous.

  12. SE Says:

I wouldn’t want anyone to see that ad either… great stuff Joel

  13. Not me Says:

“Links to illegal content on other sites can be dangerous”? What’s dangerous is Wieden’s (and apparently Career Builder’s) lack of perspective. And I think the problem here is that Wieden ISN’T a PR agency, they’re an advertising agency. Otherwise, they’d know the value of this type of dialog — or the devalue in this case.

So let me understand this, Careerbuilder, the top Internet job advertising vehicle, which is part of a multi billion dollar industry is jumping cause some guy in Ohio with a blog put up a few links. In the Wizard of OZ, Dorthy and Gang went off to see the all powerful Wizard and when they finally met it was Toto who pulled the curtain so all could see a decrepit man behind the scenes pulling the levers and strings.

So Joel - guess you are the Toto of the Online recruiting industry - keep pulling those curtains away so we can all see whats behind……..

  15. ed Says:

joel - i like your style. that was very piratebay of you.

  16. Renata Says:

How arrogant of them. Give me a break. They don’t want their masterpiece of an ad to be seen by unauthorized eyes? The whole point of YouTube clips is that they can be shared.

  17. richard Says:

Just goes to show the small mindedness of some businesses, how about careerbuilder fires its agencies ass for bringing negative publicity?

  18. Anonymous Says:

It sounded pretty preofessional to me i dont think it was worth all of the fuss it started, but whatever have fun
