microsoft’s viewmyworld.com pushes company’s cool
February 26th, 2008
Microsoft lost its cool factor a long time ago. However, certain brands like Xbox have broken out of the primary brand’s restraints. So why not create a unique employment branding experience around that coolness? Hats off to the software giant for creating ViewmyWorld.com.
The site is dedicated to driving top talent to the company’s cutting edge brands (or at least brands they think are cutting edge … Zune anyone?), by highlighting employees in those various departments.
The site includes blog posts, job-related Q & A, video, an interesting Rolodex of reasons to work for these Microsoft companies, and, yeah!, job postings (unfortunately, doing a job search takes users to Microsoft.com/careers instead of keeping things focused and cool on the microsite).
They’re even promoting the site online. Here’s a current ad showing-up on what I would assume are gaming-related Web sites:
The bad news is I can’t find a link to this site on Xbox.com, and clicking on “Jobs” from the Xbox site takes users to the same, tired, old school interface, and typing “Xbox jobs” in Google (or MSN) fails to reveal the site, but at least they’re heading in the right direction. Gotta be a good differentiator to the competition.
Here’s to hoping someone at EA is paying attention.

It’s like putting a Model-T engine in a Viper… It’s looks really good but the darned thing won’t run?!?

Joel:
View My World is not the only one - Microsoft is going “micro” with multiple targeted career sites - another is Hey Genius (http://www.hey-genius.com/) for Microsoft college recruiting.
