your new resume, compliments of ‘google sites’

February 28th, 2008

Google’s rebranded launch of Jotspot as Google Sites is fairly intriguing as an opening act. Think wiki meets Facebook meets Blogger. Techcrunch, as usual, has a good breakdown.

For us, however, most noteworthy is the ability to create online resumes.

It’s a little hard to see from the image above, but this page has links to an online resume for user Joe Kraus. Click here to see the live example.

Not impressed? That’s OK. It’s still early and the aesthetics of a page are largely the responsibility of the user, and it’s safe to assume the template options will improve. In the meantime, startup VisualCV offers a standard, more visually appealing option for job seekers:

However, assuming Google doesn’t get bored, this could be a disruptor over time. One major leg-up these Google sites have are that each one selected as public is apparently search engine friendly and hosted on a Google.com domain. Talk about potential firepower.

Granted, spammers could cause these pages to be downgraded, but I’m guessing a little spam is a small price to pay for Google pages to start showing-up in results over competitors like Wikipedia. Plus, unlike Blogger, each page is hosted on a consistent subdomain as opposed to a separate double-dot.

Similar online resume and profile providers - from LinkedIn to MySpace to VisualCV - have little hope of challenging a trusted Google domain in search results, all things considered equal. This’ll be one to watch and test.
