Sample image created on GetYourselfFired.comCandidate-matching site itzbig has launched Get Yourself Fired.com. The move is an attempt to generate a viral marketing campaign around the idea of, you guessed it, getting yourself fired. After which, you can run over to itzbig for a new one.

At the site, you superimpose your face (see pic) on a variety of compromising images to then e-mail them to your friends (or boss). You can also peruse some humorous work stress tips (click image below). And what viral marketing campaign is complete without a chance to win a $10,000 sweepstakes by simply entering a profile?

Says Jimmy Hampton, their agency’s creative director, “Our objective in creating this campaign was to build a buzz that would spread without the benefit of a traditional multi-million dollar advertising campaign. To do that we needed to create an integrated campaign that leveraged the Internet as well as more traditional venues. The objective is to drive them to the site and then slowly make them aware of itzbig and its unique value proposition.”

The company plans to market the site, as banner ads are showcased in the PR, but no specifics on where or how much have been mentioned.

Overall, this gets a thumbs-up from me. Is it Subservient Chicken? Probably not. But in today’s rough-and-tumble world of information overload for marketers, this is a creative attempt at generating business and improving brand awareness.

The timing — in the middle of a recession — is interesting.

Yeah, I gotta say I don’t love this approach. Someone’s gonna send these pics to a buddy who will send to another, they’ll get to the boss, and he’ll really get fired. If cheeky is the way to go with ad campaigns in this space, I much prefer Career Builder’s “you don’t have to work with monkeys” approach.
