beaker.com sneak peek

April 25th, 2008

Although it has yet to launch, Beaker.com will be familiar with many in the recruitosphere for the simple fact that the indelible Josh Akers of Workfarce fame left a cushy job at JobCentral to join the start-up.

Curiosity piqued, we grabbed Beaker.com CEO Jeffrey Clark for the skinny.

With Beaker’s launch coming in early May 2008 and with all our work in the past few months, I am glad CheezHead and his readers have been able to hear through the grapevine what we are developing.

Beaker is the only online community serving the entire life sciences sector and its professionals with the ability to network with their peers, advance in their knowledge, and manage the direction of their career. Incorporating functionally-specific social networking, online education & training, and video- and audio-supported job postings, Beaker provides life sciences professionals with an exclusive & private platform to connect, grow and change, more actively managing their career in the industry.

Our belief is that the Beaker platform can provide a higher level of value to the life sciences industry: for users, through peer level interaction, education and career management; and for employers, through access and exposure to the best talent in the industry.

Beaker will launch in May 2008 positioned at the intersection of social networking and online recruitment, catering to an entire industry of professionals, not just those actively seeking new opportunities. In the end, the goal is to provide a private setting for peer-level interaction and career management, free of distraction and specific to the life sciences industry.

I hope to be active on CheezHead in the coming months as Beaker takes hold.

    Hail to the Cheez!

    CEO, Beaker

Cool. What does private setting refer to? A closed network? Good luck Beaker!

  3. Alex Andrei Says:

It does look pretty cool. It’ll be interesting to see if it can really deliver on everything it promises.

Cool. Was the “life sciences industry” chosen as the niche due to the team’s experience & subject matter expertise or based on unfulfilled demand in this space?

    I know he’s proud…

Thanks for your responses & your curiosity.

A private setting refers to a few things. First, we remove all the distraction and noise of most general recruiting sites by catering to a specific audience. Life sciences professionals can experience Beaker knowing that they are surrounded by their peers in the industry and not be distracted by content, offerings, or opportunities from other industry segments. Our intent with Beaker is to make the experience for our community of users as relevant and specific as possible.

As for our technology, a private setting refers to our ability to create custom social networks for our users to create and leverage, bringing together their own personal network of peers and colleagues from around the industry. Better than e-mail or a typical user group, Beaker can provide a platform for sharing amongst those that are already connected within the industry, whether through formal associations or a personal network of relationships. More to come as we roll the technology out in May.

And, finally, we were drawn to the life sciences industry for a variety of reasons. First, my own personal background as COO of the world’s largest life sciences search firm includes almost a decade of recruiting experience for some of the best companies in the industry.

More importantly, life sciences, as an industry, is unique. Its professionals and executives tend to remain in the industry, as a loyal and engaged audience. In addition, its companies can be mostly found in one of a limited number of geographies around the US. This provides Beaker with an easier target to reach out to our user base & spread our platform. Finally, in my estimation, this is a community of potential users that does not have a home on the internet today.

By providing relevant content and user functionality to a specific audience, Beaker is hoping to create significant value to the community of life sciences professionals and executives around the world.

I hope this answers your questions. I look forward to hearing from you again.
