It may not be 10 percent of revenues, but VisualCV is utilizing a semi-unique motivator to mobilize an army of volunteer marketers: Free Tunes.
Says a company promotion,
Here is how it works: you invite friends, colleagues, and anyone else you think would like to sign up for VisualCV.com. For each individual that you get to sign up and create a VisualCV*, you earn one credit. Once you hit five credits, you’ll have earned a five-dollar Amazon.com gift card usable at the AmazonMP3 Store or for any other purchase for which Amazon.com accepts gift certificates. After that, each new member you refer is another dollar we will add to your gift certificate.

Giveaways used to be a staple of the Web. Anyone else remember iWon’s million dollar giveaway? They’ve since subsided. I, for one, hope they come back. Burn rate, baby. Burn rate!

Wow – it looks like the Cheezhead advertisers get great articles published on this site. Look at the VisualCV banner on the upper right hand side of this page or just look at this:

iWon lost.. Ohh the irony..
To Chris’ point I question… Ashamed? or happily paying the bills? I guess it depends on Joel’s definition of blogging, not yours… Let me ask why is it we’ve come to accept a :30 or :60 radio commercial interrupting our music or talk show program, although find it unacceptable on a blog post? The answer seems easy to me, if you don’t like the commercials turn the channel and stop whining.
