There are two kind of applications for iphone. A native application written in object C language which can only be downloaded from Apple store. The other is called web appliation based upon javascript and html. Web 2.0 website that include ajax based interaction are called web applications .TheLadders application, even though it is not a native application but it is a web application which takes full advantage of the html 5.0 local database of safari iphone browser for search which is not even introduced in internet explorer yet.

Eric is correct.

The terminology itself is from The Ladders via a promotional e-mail to their users specifically saying,"From the great minds at TheLadders.com Labs, we’re pleased to bring you our new web application for the iPhone!"

This is indeed, however, an iPhone-friendly Web site and NOT an application.

The term "iPhone App" doesn't really match what TheLadders launched. An "app", at least in iPhone world, means an application that's downloaded from the Apple Store, which involves a lot more time and effort - plus a "go ahead" from Apple - than what TheLadders has launched.

TheLadders has really just started singing about them having a site which is now iPhone-optimized. Kudos to their marketing for phrasing it this way, but this really isn't news-worth because most industry-leading websites already do this.

And this isn't even anywhere near being comparable to the CareerBuilder app, which is still the only "iPhone app" that's out there.
