VisualCV, a site that transforms traditional resumes into online digital representations, has announced a new job seeker/employer component.

VisualCV’s new Career Connection allows members to submit their digital resumes to companies on the site. Employers are than asked to pay a small fee if they would like to reveal the personal contact info of the candidate.

“We want to empower our individual members to manage their careers whether they are in active job search mode or reaching out to make sure they are on the radar of the companies they would like to work for,” said VisualCV CEO Jeff Hunter. “In this market it’s best practice to have your resume fired up and ready to go, but many people are also using their VisualCVs more subtly, as a link in an e-mail signature for example, to proactively network and feel prepared for whatever happens.”

Employers will also have the ability to post and search for resumes within the site’s database. During the trial, about 20 companies signed on to access the Career Connection. Michael Marlatt, Recruiting Consultant for Microsoft, was one of those trial members.

“VisualCV’s new success-based model for recruiting professionals appealed to me on many levels, not the least of which is overall value and the ability to reach professionals that are ‘looking without looking’,” said Marlatt.

Here is the payment structure for the new platform:

-US$500 for hires where the salary is below 50k
-US$1000 for hires where the salary is 50K – 100k
-US$2500 for hires where the salary is 100k- 199K
-US$5000 for hires where the salary is 200k and above

I really think that this is a cool idea, and love the concept for the industry. I think that certain things hold it back now, though. One being that I’m not sure there’s any safeguard in place for stopping companies from discrimination based on all the visual content. (then again, that never stopped them on paper-based resumes alone)

Second, the downturn in the economy is going to (as it always does) inevitably lead to less agency fees and peripheral (Visual CV -type) fees being paid by companies to save $ on the bottom line.

The truth of it is, still, that HR is one of the 1st departments to take a hit when the economy goes south.
