Cheezhead received this email yesterday inquiring as to whether online recruiting marketplace BountyJobs had made a large amount of staff cuts in recent weeks.
A friend of mine (who we’ll call ‘Bill’) sent me a linkedin message telling me that a friend of his got laid off at BJ along with their entire sales staff. I’m not sure if this was something the ‘friend’ told Bill so he didn’t have to admit he got fired, or if there is any truth in the story?
Erica Jayne Walsh, BountyJobs’ Senior Manager of Business Development, said that they did make some cuts but that all were performance-based.
“It certainly wasn’t downsizing,” Walsh said. “All were performance-based terminations. In fact, we’ve spent the past two weeks interviewing to backfill those positions, and we are also searching for talent for some newly created positions.”
Walsh said that eliminating their entire sales force would be completely unrealistic.
“We rely so heavily on sales people,” she said. “They drive all of our revenue. We did some massive hiring back in August/September time frame (20+ people), and we set ramp-up targets for them. The number that were terminated for non-performance is consistent with the percentage terminated throughout the history of our company. We have really aggressive goals and only keep A+ players. Unfortunately, you don’t always know after an interview if they are truly A+, so we give people the benefit of the doubt and set a time frame for which they are to prove themselves.”
