Tom Musbach, a writer for Yahoo! Hotjobs, recently penned what seemed like a fairly innocuous article entitled, “Career Do’s and Don’ts.”
The author selected examples of memorable figures from 2008, including Barack Obama, Michael Phelps, and Sarah Palin, and discussed how employees can harness these examples to get a leg-up in the corporate world.
Here’s a snippet:
1. DO stay focused on achieving your goals, despite adversity or distractions. President-elect Barack Obama succeeded in one of the most lengthy and public of all hiring processes, in part because he kept his cool and kept his eyes on the prize. Another great example of this principle is Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps, who won a record eight gold medals in Beijing.
3. DO find your niche and be persistent. While some have called MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow an “overnight success” due to the highly-rated show she debuted this year, she has worked for years as a radio host and pundit with a unique style that is now being appreciated by a wider audience.
4. DON’T take advantage of expense accounts or corporate credit-card privileges. Reports of excessive GOP-funded expenses by former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin created a flap that may have undermined her credibility with voters.
Did your liberal bias radar go off?
For Ken Shepherd, a managing editor for newsbusters.org, it blasted like a siren. Here is his response, which sparked a plethora of commentary from other readers mostly sounding off in agreement.
What could have been a fairly apolitical “Career Do’s and Don’ts from 2008″ retrospective has become an exhibit of how liberal media bias is ubiquitous in digital media. E-mail tipster John Genin informed us of how Yahoo! HotJobs writer Tom Musbach cited liberal heros Barack Obama and MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow as worthy of emulation while citing Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s wardrobe non-scandal as a warning against corporate expense accounts.
So is Shepherd overreacting, or did Musbach go too far?

Nope, my liberal bias radar didn’t even blip. Looks like a well-written article with good advice to me. Leaders and folks in high-profile positions need to avoid even the appearance of impropriety. That’s good advice no matter which political party platform one might subscribe to.

My liberal radar went off because it is a biased article. Totally Consumed is an idiot and it isn’t biased to him/her because that is their viewpoint…still doesn’t make it right.
I’m amazed at the number of people right of center that still have yahoo as a home page, see Julia Roberts movies (called republicans repugnant reptiles)…as soon as the right learns to exercise their right to boycott the sooner this bias will change or go away…one way or the other, their business or markets will fall by half!
