ComScore, which measures the digital world, released an analysis of Americans’ usage of the job search category and found that job search is the fastest growing content site category in 2008. The number of visitors to job sites grew 51 percent to 18.8 million visitors.

CareerBuilder.com led the category with 9.1 million visitors, up 78 percent versus a year ago. Yahoo! Hotjobs came in second with 5.6 million visitors, up 146 percent over a year ago. Third was Indeed.com with 5.1 million visitors, up 88 percent from one year ago.

Simply Hired had the strongest growth rate of the top ten sites in the category by growing 161 percent with 3.1 million visitors.

“While much of the U.S. economy is suffering, one online category that has performed significantly better than average during these challenging times is job search,” said Jack Flanagan, executive vice president of comScore. “Online job search resources provide a vital service to those in need of new job prospects and opportunities, and Americans are turning online for this assistance now more than ever.”

ComScore research found that the final months of the year, typically the slowest for job sites, were instead the most heavily trafficked, likely due to the the millions of Americans seeking new opportunities or fearing more losses.

    Hi Vanessa,
Since the job search traffic rise is significant, is there any place that has data on the number of available jobs vs number of people applying for a job posting per job board? My question is primarily asked because there are a lack of jobs out there vs the number of job seekers trafficking the job boards. I can see why the high traffic is significant to online job boards but is it significant for out of work job seekers? I recently read that one company had a job opening and over 6,500 seekers applied.
    Thanks!
