connecting the disabled to opportunity

disabledI recently had the privilege of talking to Thomas Muscalino, COO of GettingHired.com, which Muscalino said is quickly becoming the largest job portal to help connect the 22.3 million working-age people with disabilities to job opportunities.

He said that since the site’s inception eight weeks ago, over 8,000 job seekers with disabilities have registered. About 1,000 new users are added per week.

The site has also secured partnerships with 21 employers, who are adding new opportunities daily to the 15,000 jobs already posted. CSX Transportation, Pep Boys, ITT, PSEG, Celgene, and Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield are among those who have joined.

“Our mission is to create significant employment opportunities for Americans with disabilities and enable them to socialize and network in an environment that was previously unavailable to them,” said Muscalino. “At a time when our talent pool is shrinking due to boomer retirement and attrition, we are excited to launch this important resource into the marketplace and help raise awareness of this deep well of untapped talent ranging from college students to war veterans.”

In addition to being a jobs portal, the GettingHired.com technology infrastructure enables first-time social networking access to millions of users who are visually, hearing or cognitively impaired. Users are able to connect with potential peers and mentors, employers, advocates and service providers who offer niche resources for career advancement and social development.

Employers pay a subscription fee to access the resume database and to post jobs. They can utilize GettingHired’s RightMatch technology to receive candidate matches based on the employer’s requirements. The GettingHired.com portal can also be advantageous to corporations who are engaged under government contracts requiring OFCCP compliance.

Subscribers will gain access to the GettingHired Advisory Council, which is comprised of diversity officers and representatives who can provide insight and guidelines with regards to employing disabled workers.

Job seekers have unlimited and free access to the site’s job postings and social networking forums which provide advice and articles related to employment. They can also take part in interactive video interview training and personality and career assessment.

To better-serve their users, GettingHired.com has partnered with advocacy groups to help people with disabilities increase their visibility to employers. Click here to view the list or become a partner.

Muscalino said that future plans include the addition of podcasts, wikis, and other social media tools to enhance the user experience.

Isn’t this like the 3rd or 4th change of business for GettingHired.com?

  2. Jimmy Says:

Just a note to the above site: if I can’t easily find pricing, I’m out.

  3. Chad Sowash Says:

    You might’ve missed this one…

Disaboom.com is community driven, slick and inspirational site which provides users with disbilities and their caretakers content revolving around Health & Living just for starters.. Plus they take the JobCentral API which includes hundreds of thousands of REAL jobs from the National Labor Exchange (plug)..

Seems like this site is a win-win for both jobseekers and employers.

I particularly liked the website designers attention to detail and focus on the user experience – such as the ability for visitors to easily adjust font size and contrast. Great features overall and I think this is a great benefit for visitors who have sight limitations.

Good luck to the entire GettingHired team!

  5. Steve Says:

@robert – I remember them from a long time ago too. This must be their 200th business model. Who is funding this crap a$$ management team? Word on the street their CEO doesn’t even know how to connect to the internet and he is the same one still running this sh*t show. HOW LONG WILL THIS TORTURE LAST!!!!! hahhhh

  6. Vanessa Dennis Says:

Thanks, Chad, I’d like to look into Disaboom further.

I had no idea this site has gone through so many transitions. It certainly does sound suspicious, given the comments above.

  7. Tom Muscalino Says:

I am Tom Muscaino, COO with GettingHired.com. My involvement with GettingHired commenced 2 years ago. Prior to GettingHired I headed up several large public companies and obviously worked with talented and capable management teams. I am proud to be associated with the dedicated and capable GettingHired team.
Don’t be misled by uninformed malcontents with some hidden agenda.
GettingHired.com is a wonderful initiative developed to help the 23 million working age American’s living with disabilities secure sustainable employment and who, for far too long, have been overlooked.

  8. Bob Cover Says:

There is a misunderstanding… Gettinghired has 3 revenue producing business models, the latest being a national job board that works on helping people with disabilities find suitable employment by matching them to company job posting who which to hire from this community.

Vanessa, since Chad is a senior level executive at a company called Direct Employers who has a partnership relatonship with disaboom, he should obviously be promoting Disaboom site, and for the right reasons, but there are some considerable difference between Gettinghired and Disaboom.

  9. Chris Says:

Come on Mr. Muscalino and Bob…are you serious?

The social networking component is worse than anything I have seen.

The website looks like my 3rd grade kid designed it (nice bumblebee!).

Rightmatch technology = still selling this smoke?

GettingHired Advisory Council = come on really?

All their jobs on their site aren’t friendly to the disabled, it’s every single one of their poor swindled clients’ jobs or just scraped jobs.

  10. Anonymous Says:

@bob what are the considerable differences? It looks to me like gettinghired is trying to be like disaboom and its not going so well. These guys make up all their stats. They have for every for every model they have tried. My guess is their management team has no clue about this space or technology.
