Not a day goes by that I don’t hear of another clever marketing ploy that a job seeker has come up with to get hired.
Case in point: a Colorado woman who was terminated from her job at a call center got sick of sending out resume after resume to no avail. So Mary Walker, 53, decided to sell her skills on eBay.
Problem is, it doesn’t sound exactly legal.
Walker received eight bids from two different bidders. The winning bid of $18.69 went to Richard Bonilla. Bonilla said he plans to use Walker’s copyediting skills to proofread documents for around 5 to 15 hours. If he used her for 10 hours, this would come out to only $1.87 per hour – an amount well below the $6.55 federal minimum wage.
Despite the low amount, the temp job could earn Walker some much-needed exposure to other managers and workers who may know of job openings in other areas.
“It’s just been kind of a great way to connect,” said Walker. “I’m not in it to make a lot of money; I think it served its purpose. … It added some energy and creativity to the process.”
